Content marketing is a relatively new form of internet marketing and it refers to the creation and marketing of content online for the purpose of building your business. There are a variety of ways to utilize content marketing depending on the amount of time, energy and resources you want to commit to it, the type of business you are in and your business goals.

Why Content Marketing Works

In the early days of internet marketing people searched the internet differently than we do today. The tendency was to search for very general terms and so the best way to market a website was to try and optimize it for those types of terms. This type of marketing is what we call Search Engine Optimization or SEO and is still a very valuable method of internet marketing. Today online searches are getting more and more specific, and why has that changed? There are 2 primary reasons why – there is more content and the search engines are better.

More Content - When we first started surfing the web years ago there wasn’t nearly the amount of content so it was harder to find what we were looking for. Even if what we were looking for existed the chances are that it wasn’t optimized so that it could be easily found. Today there are literally billions of pages on the internet and millions being added every day. This means that if we put in a more specific search query we are very likely to find pages that are specific to it.

Better Search Engines - Over the years the search engines have been improving how they rank pages for search. Remember years ago how you would click on a search result and get to a page that had absolutely nothing to do with what you were looking for? That rarely happens anymore because the search engines are so much more sophisticated.

Statistics show that a growing number of searches have 4 or more words in the query. Analytics prove that searchers are arriving at websites from a wider and wider variety of search terms. This opens up opportunities for businesses to target for specific keyword search phrases that are a better fit for their business than some of the more general terms. The end result is higher quality traffic that is more likely to buy.
